Big Fish, Small Pond, Zero Return. A Junior Golfer Reality Check
January 31, 2026
I'm going to be harsh, but you need to hear this: Winning in Thailand is no longer enough. Last week's leaderboard for the AJGA International Pathway Series in Vietnam (January 25, 2026) was a shock to many, but I view it as a gift. If you're a 15-year-old dominating local circuits, congratulations! That's an incredible achievement and speaks to your talent. However, I'm here to provide a reality check you probably won't like: being a "Big Fish" in our local pond is currently the most dangerous place for your long-term future.
I'm saying it because I've lived it. I played the AJGA circuit myself, and without that specific global exposure, I wouldn't have secured my own D1 scholarship. Below are the truths many aren't aware of, or perhaps are in denial about. Have a read and you be the judge.
1. The Home Turf Delusion: A Tale of Two Leaderboards
For too long, the narrative in Thailand has been skewed. We celebrate regional wins and imagine they lead directly to professional glory. But look at what happens when the "Global Machine" (the AJGA) lands in Southeast Asia.
The 2025 Chiang Mai Reality Check
In September 2025, the AJGA Pathway Series came to Alpine Golf Resort. Despite being on home soil, Thai players were unable to secure the top spot in either division. The winners, Karnav Chauhan (India) and Xu Ningyao (China), didn't just have better swings, they had better "Tournament IQ." They managed the pressure of international expectations while the local field struggled to adapt to the "AJGA standard."
The 2026 Vietnam Wake-Up Call
Just last week in Trang An, Vietnam, the pattern repeated. Hose Lee (South Korea) and Le Chuc An (Vietnam) took the championships.
The Stat: 120 golfers from 19 countries competed for a few "Golden Tickets"—Full Exemptions into the US AJGA circuit.
The Reality: If you (or your child) wasn't on that leaderboard, they didn't just lose a trophy, they lost a year of recruiting momentum.
2. The Tournament "Hamster Wheel": Don't burn out!
I get it. It's often cheaper to enter a local tournament to "practice" on a course than it is to pay green fees and caddies for a casual round. You want to stay "tournament tough."
But playing 30+ tournaments a year in Thailand doesn't make you (or your child) a better recruit; it creates a tired, burnt-out teenager. If there are no WAGR points or AJGA Stars at stake, you have to pause and ask "why am I playing in this tournament?"
Real growth happens in the gaps: the quiet weeks where you fix the technical flaws exposed under pressure. If you never stop playing, you don't get to the crucial areas of "improvement." By the fourth tournament in a row, you aren't practicing winning; you're practicing how to fail while exhausted.
3. The "Pro" Fallacy vs. The D1 Reality
Turning "Pro" at 16 is a business registration, not a career. The global probability of a junior golfer making a profitable living as a pro is 0.006%—roughly 1 in 16,486.

Compare that to the value of an NCAA Division I education. A D1 scholarship is now worth upwards of $80,000 USD/year (approx. 2.8 million Baht).
Look at Fifa Laopakdee: A junior at Arizona State University. He didn't rush to turn pro. He used the college system to grow, and now, in January 2026, he is a Masters-bound amateur. And the even more exciting update: he recently signed with WME so his opportunity for NIL just became a reality! Fifa built a foundation of concrete, not sand.

4. Speaking of NCAA D1: Did You Know The Roster Has Evolved?
Starting this 2025-2026 season, the NCAA officially implemented a 9-player roster cap for D1 Golf. In the past, a coach could carry 12 or 14 players, leaving a few spots for "projects" or late bloomers from Thailand who showed "potential."

Those spots are extinct. If you aren't one of the Top 9 on a coach's list, you don't just lose the scholarship, you lose the roster spot entirely. There is no "waiting your turn." Coaches are now looking for "Plug-and-Play" assets who can score on Day One.
Your Path Forward
I know this is a lot, and I've outlined some pretty harsh information. However, you don't have to navigate it blindly. Together we can create more sustainable success. The question is up to you: are you a happy fish swimming in a pond, or would you rather be a blue whale in the ocean?
